At my gym all we use is free weights and body weight exercises. Now part of that may be due to the fact we're pretty new but the main reason is that machines operate on a one-size-fits-all system and so you don't push your limits. Not to mention they can actually cause more problems compared to the results you get.
I am not saying there is not a time and a place for exercise machines but as a rule of thumb you will always get a better workout and a more full body experience using free weights and your own body weight while pushing out those reps.
