The answer to that is a big NO. I have a TV and yes I do watch it, but I am not fat. As a matter of fact 99% of America owns a TV, 66% of them own more than one TV. Yet 31% of Americans are obese and 65% are overweight. So there are lots of people out there who own TVs and are not fat.
So what is the trick? Moderation. Like in everything moderation is key. Yes if you sit in front of a TV for 7 hours a day, eat junk food, drink Mountain Dew and get no exercise you will get fat. But if you do all those things in moderation it a whole other story. Spend an hour on the TV/computer, have a can of Mountain Dew with a home grilled burger, veggies and fruit. Then make it outside for a 30min run and you have a different outcome.
The problem in America is not the TV or the fast food or the loads of sugar in soda. It is that we have become lazy. We don't want to cook or wait on our food so all we eat is fast food. We don't want to workout because that takes effort so we watch TV and hope we will find a pill that will cure all. Our kids follow our example and end up overweight 20 years earlier than we did.
All it takes to live a healthy life style is moderation, a little hard work and perseverance. It is not going to be a walk in the park but it is well worth the investment for you and our future generations.
